Thank you for giving me something to look forward to, and for getting me through a lonely and difficult adolescence. Thank you for showing me what friendship should look like. And thank you for giving the world Albus Dumbledore.

Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins (YA)Screen Shot 2015-09-23 at 7.46.18 PM

Thank you for proving to me that I can enjoy books that are not necessarily “happy-go-lucky,” “happy ending” books. Thank you for giving us realistic and very human characters. And thank you for bringing to light the terrible consequences and effects war has on our young people.

Thank you for being the first series I can ever remember completely reading. And thank you for instilling my love of all things sci-fi early in my life. Also thanks for making aliens completely terrifying to me!

Thank you for being one of my all-time favorite series ever (even to this day I love re-reading them). Thank you for showing that love interests don’t always have to be the “Bad Boy,” and for making it clear that the “Good Guy” character can still be *hot* lol.

Winner’s Curse by Marie Rutkowski (YA)

Thank you for showing us that a heroine’s best asset can be intelligence and doesn’t have to be beauty and fighting skills! I love seeing a main character whose greatest attribute is her military strategic genius!

Alanna by Tamora Pierce (YA)

Thank you for being among the first ever High Fantasy books I ever read, and for starting my love of that genre early in my pre-teen years! Thanks for showing girls can do anything boys can do!

Kiss of Highlander by Karen Marie Moning

Thank you for being the first ever adult romance book I can remember reading. Thank you for inspiring a love of Scotland in me at a young age. I can trace my desire to travel the world back to these Scotland-based books (and in fact Scotland was the first country I ever travelled too!)

Illuminae by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff (YA)

  1. Ah! I’m thankful for ‘Alanna’ as well. It was such an amazing book and I love the way it was written and the realistic struggles that she faced. I will really have to go back and read this series at some point. It’s been too long since I’ve read it.
